Short version: I collect what you send me so I can ring you back. I don't sell it, share it, or send you anything you didn't ask for.

Who this is about

Tenon is a sole trader based in Hobart, Tasmania, providing custom software development to small businesses. In this policy, "I" means Tenon and "you" means anyone using this website or engaging me for work.

What I collect

When you fill in the enquiry form: your name, business name, phone number, suburb, trade, what you're currently using, and whatever you write in the message box. All of it is optional except name, business, phone and message — and you can always just ring instead.

When you visit the site: anonymous, aggregated statistics — page views, which pages are popular, roughly which country visitors are in, and which site referred you. This does not use cookies, does not follow you across other websites, and cannot identify you.

If you become a client: the information needed to do the work and invoice you — business details, contact details, and whatever data we agree to migrate into the system I build for you.

What I use it for

Replying to your enquiry, quoting and doing the work, invoicing, and keeping records the ATO requires. That's it. I do not use your details for marketing lists, I do not send newsletters, and I do not pass anything to third parties for their own purposes.

Who else touches it

A small number of service providers handle data on my behalf, purely to make the site and my business function: the form provider that delivers enquiries to my inbox, my email provider, my website host, my privacy-focused analytics provider, and my accounting software. Each is bound to use the information only to provide their service. Some of these providers store data overseas.

Client data in systems I build

If I build software for you, the data inside it is yours, not mine. I access it only to build, fix, maintain or migrate the system, or when you ask me to. It is backed up daily. If you stop using my services you get a full export in a standard format, and I delete my copies on request.

How long I keep it

Enquiries that don't become work: deleted after twelve months. Client records: kept for at least five years after the last invoice, because tax law requires it, then deleted.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, hosting is access-controlled, and backups are encrypted. No system is perfectly secure, but if there were ever a breach likely to cause you serious harm, I would tell you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Your choices

You can ask me what I hold about you, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it. Email hello@tenon.com.au or ring 0426 465 844 and I'll deal with it within 30 days at the outside, usually much sooner.

If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, tell me first and I'll try to fix it. If that doesn't resolve it, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
